Tasting Notes: This 2008 vintage of our Cuvée du Soleil kicks off with authority. The dark inky liquid demonstrates the first hint of what’s to come. The glass fills with a tremendous amount of aroma that at first makes it hard to distinguish individual characteristics through the richly complex nose. As you dive deeper into the glass, individual aromas begin to stand out. Dried Cherries, dried plums, vanilla bean, and even a whisper of candied yams, along with hibiscus flower move into earthy and spicy aromas of tobacco leaves, bits of leather and toasted pecans, while hints of cardamom pods and black licorice finish out the opulent nose of our 2008 Cuvée du Soleil. The robust mouth filling palate of this wine definitely follows suit. Not a single “nook or cranny” of your mouth is left untouched by the complete richness of the 2008 Cuvée. Cherry fruit leather is the first of many components that jumps into the fray of flavors. Then come blackberry preserves, ripe cassis, hibiscus flower, along with dried plums and figs laced with a bit of smokiness. Earthy notes of leather, tobacco and tea leaves with spiced cranberry compote linger on your palate as the wine refuses to let go of your taste buds. Using four of the five major Bordeaux red varieties of grape the 2008 blend weighs in at 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Malbec. This robust red blend with go nicely with most rich red meat dishes. A few that come to mind are a nice New York strip steak, braised lamb shank, or a traditional Osso Bucco over Risotto.
