Syrah is one of the most misunderstood wines in Washington because there are so many styles of this wine. I have always loved the more restrained style of Syrah, more reminiscent of the style found in the Northern Rhone in France. I love this wine because it is food friendly, with good acidity and subtle, dark fruit notes rather than in your face jammy, musky aromas.
Aroma: The nose commences with ripe raspberries with a floral accent then moves into subtle notes of green peppercorns, leather and I get a hint of German chocolate cake.
Taste: Flavors of green peppercorns kick off the palate. As the wine sits in your mouth, raspberry laced with earthy notes are there and the hints of German chocolate cake come into play on the finish once you’ve swallowed the wine.
Food Pairing: I would love to have this wine with a green peppercorn crusted steak topped with sautéed wild mushroom; a mixture of Chanterelles, Wood Ear and Oyster mushrooms would be amazing.
